Remembering dreams improves psychological health. We have the opportunity of learning from the subtle messages from within. The healthiest people go beyond remembering dreams to consciously playing with their dreams for healing or shaping their future.

If they have a repeating nightmare, they tell themselves before they go to sleep that they will confront their demons. They take full responsibility for everything that happens inside and outside themselves. They have the confidence that there is no situation that cannot be solved by prayer, meditation, and dreaming.

Varieties of Meditation

Some mystic schools encourage the use of visual forms (such as mandalas), or music, the emotions, affirmations, etc., to enter the Infinite. Tibetan tantra encourages mental images (“visualization”). Zen (and countless other mystical schools) see all “sacred” images as illusions to be transcended. Various schools of Hinduism use images and rituals as temporary stages to be transcended. They realize that all spiritual practices help different types of people at various stages of understanding.

A sincere seeker may walk a long way
before she looks within and finds her sacred path.

From Ignorance to Bliss

The senses are instruments of the mind. The mind is an instrument of the soul. Ignorance of these basics is known in the mysterious East as “avidya.” If you live for sense enjoyment or pleasures of the mind (“intellectual challenges”), then the soul will feel neglected. Wealth, experiences, achievements, and fame mean nothing to a neglected soul.

Life is a mystery
but not necessarily mysterious.

The path of wisdom (or “vidya”) is to see the universe from a deeper, more basic level: from the level of light, energy, or cause. The paradox is that the senses become more alert. Each small, physical movement is a pleasurable experience. Each thought is inspired by grace.

Seek the soul first. Seek the soul last.

How? By meditating immediately upon rising. By continuously pondering your eternal nature. By looking within for the cause of every event in your life. By slowing down and ensuring that your every decision is inspired by your higher Self. By looking at peoples’ souls instead of their personalities or bodies. By making every breath a sacred experience. By meditating whenever you rest. By transmuting breath into light in the sacred silence of mental stillness.
